Protecting core woodland habitat for threatened native birds in the Lower Hunter and New England Tablelands is the aim of a national partnership between Birds Australia, the NCT, Trust for Nature Victoria and Tasmanian Land Conservancy. The three State-based land trusts use conservation land covenants to protect important ‘hotspots’ for woodland-dependant birds on private land.
The Woodland Birds for Biodiversity Project is being funded by the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country initiative. It delivers education field days and workshops to communities, along with targeted protection of the best bird habitat areas.
Guided by priority areas identified through Birds Australia’s Atlas project, the NCT has targeted the Lower Hunter and New England Tablelands and has assisted land owners to protect more than 300 hectares of woodlands that contain vital habitat for native birds like the regent honeyeater.

What is a conservation land covenant? NCT conservation agreements, or land covenants, are the core product that the NCT offers private land owners with an interest in biodiversity conservation. If you purchase a piece of rural real estate from the NCT, the conservation agreement (covenant) is established in conjunction with the sale of the land. If you were to buy a rural property through another vendor, the NCT can help you protect the biodiversity of your land by adding a conservation land covenant to the property.
