Supporting Land Owners
Empowering and supporting private land owners to take up the mantle of nature conservation is the primary objective of the Nature Conservation Trust (NCT) of NSW.
Partners in environmental land management
Those land owners who take the inspiring step forward to protect their natural landscapes with a conservation agreement (also known as a land covenant) are never alone. NCT covenantees are viewed as partners in our mutual vision for biodiversity conservation. NCT staff members maintain regular contact and the property owner automatically becomes a member of our conservation land management stewardship program. The expert advice and assistance given by NCT staff is just as enduring as the land covenant itself.

Consultation and constructive advice
NCT staff members consult closely with rural property owners to understand their personal needs and future plans for their land, whether they be plans for conservation or other uses. We then work together to draft an adaptive conservation land management plan that is consistent with the owner’s ambitions and our shared goals for biodiversity protection.
The NCT walks property owners through their conservation agreement (legally binding land covenant) and can provide referrals to lawyers, land valuers and accountants with specific land conservation knowledge and expertise.
Once the conservation agreement has been signed, the detailed plan of management guides the ongoing care of those areas of biodiversity protected under the agreement. Our new rural partners are also then eligible for further support under the NCT environmental land management stewardship program.

Valued partners and sustainable relationships
The NCT environmental land management stewardship program rewards land owners for their dedication to private land conservation. It guarantees them ongoing support, guidance and environmental management advice.
During regular visits, the NCT’s experienced natural resource managers share their wisdom and provide practical and sustainable ideas for land management, as well as share in the land owner’s environmental successes. They also regularly monitor the health of the protected ecological communities (native plants and animals) and advise on funding sources for future improvements.
The NCT invests in its relationships with its land owner partners and works hard to sustain them. The benefits this brings – to biodiversity protection as well as to the individuals within our conservation community – is immeasurable.

The Nature Conservation Trust negotiates legally binding conservation land title covenants with rural land owners in NSW to help protect biodiversity on private acreage.
NCT land owners and covenantees start with a rigorous assessment of their property’s ecological values, including mapping of vegetation communities and animal populations. This informs the development of a detailed plan of land conservation management.
