The NCT buys three new properties near Holbrook

The NCT has purchased three more properties in the NSW South Western Slopes region as part of a major project with the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA).

The RTA has engaged the NCT to assist in providing offsets for the clearance of native vegetation associated with the Hume Highway Duplication Project between Table Top and Tarcutta. Through the project, NCT is protecting significant areas of Box Gum Grassy Woodland and Derived Grassland, an Endangered Ecological Community (EEC) listed in the Commonwealth Environment Protection & Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999), and rehabilitating adjoining land to meet this classification. Offset areas must provide habitat for nationally threatened species such as swift parrots and provide connectivity to existing conservation reserves.

The three new properties, located near Holbrook, are each 42 hectares in size and located adjacent to one another. Together they contain approximately 40 hectares of existing Box-Gum Grassy Woodland, and around 70 hectares of native pastures that we will rehabilitate to woodlands using a combination of natural regeneration, direct seeding and hand planting.

After nearly a decade of low rainfall winter seasons, the recent soaking rains have revealed a treasure trove of patient underground tubers of chocolate lilies and greenhood and sun orchids, amongst the cover of mosses and native grasses on the properties.

The three properties are important for landscape conservation connectivity, being part of a priority link between reserves within the Slopes to Summit project area. All the properties are relatively free of major weed infestations and have incredible views of Mount Kosciuszko and the Snowy Mountains’ Main Range.

The properties will soon be placed back on the market, to be sold to new landowners with attached plans of management and conservation agreements protecting their ecological values forever.
